Phonics & Early Reading
Early Reading and Phonics at The Globe Primary Academy
At The Globe Primary Academy, we are passionate about helping every child become a confident and enthusiastic reader. We use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme to support early reading and writing from the start of Reception through to Key Stage 1 (and beyond, where necessary).
What is Read Write Inc.?
Read Write Inc. is a structured and systematic phonics programme developed by Ruth Miskin. It is designed to teach children how to read accurately and fluently while also developing a love of reading. The programme also supports spelling, handwriting, and early writing skills.
How It Works
Daily Phonics Sessions: Children take part in daily RWI sessions, grouped according to their current reading level. This means they learn at a pace that is right for them, with regular assessment to ensure progress.
Learning Sounds First: Children are taught to recognise and blend letter sounds (known as "pure sounds") to read words. They also learn how to segment words to spell them.
Reading and Writing Together: Children use specially designed RWI storybooks that match their phonics level, helping them to practise reading with increasing confidence and comprehension.
Repetition and Practice: The scheme includes lots of opportunities to revisit and apply learning through fun and engaging activities.
Supporting a Love of Reading
Alongside Read Write Inc., we foster a love of stories and books from the earliest days in school. Children are read to daily and have access to a rich and varied selection of books in class and in our school library. We also encourage reading at home and provide reading books matched to each child’s phonics stage.
Parental Support
We know that reading at home plays a key role in your child’s progress. We offer parent workshops, phonics guides, and regular updates to help you support your child effectively.
Further details on how you can support your child can be found on the Read Write Inc. website.
